Board Composition and Assessment – The Current Scene

Program Overview:  This will be a panel discussion focusing on board composition and board assessment, exploring the increased scrutiny being placed on board member experience and qualifications, the importance and value of experiential breadth and diversity on boards, and the value and risks associated with robust board member assessment.  This presentation should be of interest to both early stage and larger company boards.

Ron Brown (Moderator) is a Partner with Heidrick & Struggles, the global retained executive search firm, and Managing Partner of their Western Region. Ron’s national practice focuses on senior executive level search assignments for CEOs, COOs, CFOs and Board Members for both publicly traded and private equity backed companies. Prior to Heidrick & Struggles, Ron served in various appointed government positions, including Deputy Associate Director of Presidential Personnel at The White House. He earned his B.A. at Washington and Lee University.

David Westerlund is Executive Vice President, Administration & Corporate Secretary at Ball Corp. (NYSE: BLL) and he serves on the Board of Directors of Xcel Energy, Inc. (NYSE: XEL) and Exempla, Inc. He has worked for Ball since 1987 holding a variety of Human Resources management roles. Prior to Ball, he spent twelve years with TBG, Inc. David earned his J.D. at the University of South Carolina and his B.S., Economics at the University of Virginia.

Greg Ast is a principal with Linx Group, a consulting firm providing strategic planning, leadership development and executive coaching. As a consultant, Greg has advised boards, leadership teams and owners across a wide range of industries on issues of board development and assessment, succession planning, strategic planning and performance management. He was previously a Partner with GRANT Partners, and also worked with Accenture and GE Capital. Greg earned his M.B.A. at Wichita State University and his B.S., Business Administration at Georgetown University.
